We have all been through Team Building days where we set off with high expectations of the day and hope that the day will highlight areas where our team can improve its productivity and become more effective in the delivery of its service. How many of us though have come back at the end of that day and wondered just what did we achieve?

Welcome now to Team Coaching

“Effective team coaching helps teams to focus on their key priorities, working
collaboratively around that agreed consensus and with each individual being actively supportive of others in the process”

  • What a difference to the bottom line that would make—efficiency, productivity, service, quality and costs!
  • What a difference to staff morale!
  • What a difference to staff retention!
  • What a difference to the energy offered at work!
  • What a difference to staff relationships!

Feedback from Team Coaching facilitated by Barbara Cobbold

"Barbara successfully facilitated 3 events for my service over a 9 month
period. In April 2009 I took over managing a small team of Children's
Independent Reviewing officers, each had within their role specialisms, for 3 staff these were unique and not undertaken by the other staff. Due to historical line management issues this team was also fragmented and understood little about each other roles/functions/workloads etc, they needed to be brought together to think and work together as a team whilst still retaining their current and unique roles.

I appreciated planning the sessions in order to team build but due to
workload pressures Barbara also gave a clear commitment to me that these days would also achieve a certain amount of output on areas where we had been 'stuck'. Sessions were planned around identifying the 'needs' of the team and the needs of the service, resolving tensions/conflict from within by getting the team to understand roles/responsibilities and by giving a SMART framework to the team in which to affect change.

At the follow up sessions progress was checked against a list of goals set from the previous session. The team found these days insightful, challenging but thought provoking, functional in that they were achieving change from within and motivational, we achieved several goals that had been outstanding and gave thought to exploring other issues as a team in the future. All left with an 'I can' 'we can ' attitude, it has genuinely made the team function better as a unit, further sessions are to be planned."

Thought for the day...

“If you want to move people, it has to be towards a vision
which is positive for them.” Martin Luther King

Team Coaching is about ensuring that:

  • the team meets its goals through co-ordinated activities, and
  • Individuals within the team are developed.

So good team coaching has two outcomes:

  • More effective and efficient teams
  • Enhanced skills and attributes for individuals within the team

Ineffective Teams:
The output of the team is MUCH LESS than the sum of the individuals.

Effective Teams:
The output of the team is FAR GREATER than the sum of the individuals.
